In this example, all your computer's internet traffic goes to USA (Florida), except Microsoft
Edge web browser goes to India, Google Chrome goes to Switzerland, ipinfo.io goes to UK (London).
Google adwords are blocked, while Mybank.com and Gmail.com are excluded from the VPN.

How to Use VPN Split Tunnels on Windows With HideAway
HideAway split tunneling is built around rules. Instead of choosing only which apps use the VPN, you can create rules for the whole computer, individual applications, websites/domains, IP addresses and ports.
This guide starts simple and then shows how the rules can be combined.
Example 1: Send Chrome through the VPN and leave everything else alone
HideAway does have some preset rules enabled, and you can select 'Redirect Google Chrome to..', then select the location.
Alternatively, you can write you own rule.
- Open HideAway.
- Leave the whole-computer redirect disabled.
- Add an application rule.
- Choose Redirect.
- Select or enter
chrome.exe. - Choose the VPN location you want.
- Enable the rule.
Chrome traffic will use that VPN location while other applications continue using the normal connection.
Example 2: Put the whole PC on a VPN, but exclude one website
- Enable a whole-computer redirect and choose your default VPN location.
- Add a website/domain rule.
- Choose Exclude.
- Enter the domain, for example
mybank.com. - Enable the rule.
Traffic to that domain will use the normal connection while the rest of the computer remains redirected.
Example 3: Different apps, different countries
You can create multiple application redirect rules.
For example:
chrome.exe→ Germanymsedge.exeandmicrosoftedge.exeandmicrosoftedgecp.exe→ United Kingdom- game executable → USA
- everything else → direct
This is one of HideAway's key differences from ordinary include/exclude split tunneling.
Example 4: A website overrides the browser rule
Suppose Chrome is set to Germany, but you want one website to use Denmark.
Create a website/domain redirect rule for that site and choose Denmark.
Drag the website rule above the Chrome rule.
Because the website rule is more higher in theh rules section, it will take precedence over the Chrome application rule.
Example 5: Block rather than redirect
A custom rule can use Block instead of Redirect or Exclude.
This can be useful when you want a specific application, domain, IP or port to have no internet access while HideAway is active.
Rule precedence matters
When several rules could apply to the same traffic, the higher rule determines the result. Keep your rules organised by dragging and dropping to the appropriate rank and give each one a clear name or purpose.
A good troubleshooting technique is to temporarily disable rules one at a time if traffic is not taking the path you expect.
How to find a Windows process name
For application rules, click the 'Add Rule' button and search for your application. HideAway will automatically show this if it's running on your computer.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to reconnect after every rule change?
Follow the behaviour shown by your current HideAway version. If a route does not appear to change immediately, reconnect or restart the affected application and test again.
How can I check which country an app is using?
Open an IP-checking website inside the application/browser you are testing (eg ipinfo.io/json). For application-specific tests, make sure the check itself is not overridden by a separate rule.
Can I save my rules for another computer?
HideAway supports exporting and importing rule configurations. Click the three dots next to the 'Add Rule' button and select to export the rules.
Can I use split tunneling without redirecting the whole computer?
Yes. You can disable the whole-computer rule and redirect only selected applications or websites.
